There are two ways to install plugins in WordPress 3.0. You can either search for and install plugins via Plugins/Add New in your admin panel, or search for and download plugins from the plugin directory, then upload them to /wp-content/plugins/. Now, thanks to Mark Jaquith, there’s a new way to install plugins.
The new plugin installer tool allows users to easily install plugins via a web-based interface outside of WordPress, with no FTP knowledge or tedious admin panel searching required. The new tool will be officially rolled into the plugin directory during WordPress’ impending site-wide redesign. For now, plugin developers can create a link directing users to the plugin installer tool and their plugin, and the rest of us can use the bookmarklet to install plugins from the directory.
New plugins
Foursquare map
Foursquare is rising in popularity, and will continue to grow. This plugin makes it easy to share your last check-in location without needing to worry about giving away personal info, and you don’t need to be an expert in mapping APIs!

For a long time the search function of WordPress has been the achilles heel of the publication platform and numerous plugins extending the WordPress search have been created and uploaded to WordPress Extend.
The team of IOIX Ukraine have developed a new WordPress plugin, SearchPlugins in collaboration with Splashpress Media, owner of this blog, to power the search function of your site, WordPress blog. After months of hard work we now are taking applications to our (closed) Beta program and will slowly roll out the new plugin, while we add more features to the functionality.
We are now taking applications to join the closed beta program and will on a regular basis add new Beta testers to the platform
To view results of the plugin just use the search functionality here at BloggingPro or check out the results for a search for blogging success here at BP.
How Does It…

I’ve been promising a real-world example of what’s possible with custom post types for a while. But, I didn’t want to put together yet-another-long-technically-detailed post. I wanted to give you something that would open your mind to the possibilities.
And, there’s loads of possibilities.
I’ve been tinkering around with the idea of building a forum plugin, so I decided to get behind the project completely and make it happen. What started out as a simple project quickly turned into something that a lot of people have been wanting — a forum plugin that fully integrates itself within WordPress.
Post types for the plugin
The plugin uses three post types for handling the structure:
Forums: This is your top level, which holds everything else.
Topics: Children of forums and use the topic tags taxonomy.
Replies: These are the individual posts made within a topic.
I had originally taken a different route…
This is a handy little widget that will pull a list of all the sites in your network and order them by last updated. The code for this was originally in the home theme of the WPMU download, so thanks to Donncha for that bit.
Last Updated Sites widget (39)
I tested it in the mu-plugins folder, but you should also be able to use it as a regular plugin as it only needs to run on one blog. It’s also the older widget code, so you can only use it once, not multiple times, and it has no options. Short, sweet & simple.

So, if you’re looking to have a widget that will show the last ten blogs, go get it here.

We had a client who is using the WP125 Ads plugin. When they upgraded to WordPress 3.0, it was having an error. I fixed the error and forwarded it to our client. Other folks reported the same issue in this thread in the WP support forums. The author of the plugin posted and indicated he was going to be tied up for a bit. I have forward the update to the plugin author. At some point he will be releasing an updated version.
In the mean time, you can download my updated version: WP125 Ads Plugin (74). If you have issues with it, please post those issues in the support thread linked above. I won’t be attempting to do other bug fixes or CSS changes.

Everyone loves WordPress plugins. They’re great and they can do a ton of great things from improve your commenting system to improving your site’s security.

Mitcho who is the author of the Yet Another Related Posts Plugin is currently working on a new project called ShrimpTest, sponsored by Automattic. ShrimpTest is a simple, A/B testing plugin that enables users to create various experiments on their site. For example, with ShrimpTest, you can create an experiment to track conversions based on the text used. In the video demo, Mitcho runs an experiment between a large version of a PayPal donation button versus a smaller one to see which provides a better conversion rate. Out of about 3,000 people, the results were almost split with a slightly higher percentage converting through the larger image. I encourage you to watch the following video to get a better idea as to what ShrimpTest is all about.

Ever wanted an easy way to make sure adults were the only ones that saw your content? It’s become a lot easier to do now thanks to the release of the Restricted To Adults plugin by Saguaro Digital. What this plugin does is add a unique string of “meta data” which can be inserted into the computer code of any website. Parental filtering software recognizes the tag and prevents children from viewing adult content. Diligence needs to be made on the parent to make sure the computer in use by the child has parent filtering software installed or else the RTA tag is useless.
The plugin was developed free of charge for ASACP which stands for the Association Of Sites Advocating Child Protection.

It doesn’t take much to make me happy. Sometimes a little WordPress plugin comes along that makes me smile, and WP Maintenance Mode is one of them.
Let me start by saying — I’m not a web developer. I’m not a blog designer. I know just enough CSS and HTML to be dangerous, and I have no problem keeping it that way. Would it be super handy to know CSS and HTML? Absolutely, but it’s one of those things that always gets pushed down in my list of priorities.
So now that I’ve revealed that little snippet from my life, back to the WP Maintenance Mode plugin.
Why do I like this plugin so much?
Because I’m not a code-guru and I don’t have test sites set up where I can test new things, slowly redesign my blogs, and be a cool designer. The design changes I make myself are…

Very exciting news that invites to VaultPress — a subscription-based protection, security and backup service for WordPress blogs and sites — are now starting to be sent out.
Over the weekend we started to trickle out the first Golden Ticket invites to VaultPress. This means that if you’re on the list you now have a semi-random chance of being one of the first people who can sleep more soundly at night because of VaultPress.
If you didn’t receive your invite yet, there is a way to possibly get one more quickly:
If you’d like to move ahead in the line, write a blog post about why you want to use VaultPress and link it here, or tweet why you need your site protected by VaultPress and use the hash tag #vaultpress.

Making money online is a white hot topic online nowadays and will be for a long time to come, since everybody wants to make money from their blog. Whether its a personal journal type blog or full scale rockstar blogging; a little extra bucks won’t hurt.

Attracting valuable advertisers, selling the right affiliate products aren’t always straight forward and simple and can be extremely time consuming. BackupBuddy is a great plugin. In fact, recently, it’s become even better now that it has support for Amazon S3 for off site backups and the FTPS protocol. Another staple in the PluginBuddy store is the PluginBuddy Mobile plugin. This plugin enables you to use the built-in style manager you create mobile-ready themes for iPhones or other mobile devices. Considering PluginBuddy is on a roll, now may be as good a time as ever to purchase the PluginBuddy developer suite. And here is one more good reason to do so.
Thanks to the guys over at PluginBuddy.com, I’m able to offer a special coupon code for the first 24 people that take advantage that will take 25% off the purchase price of the Developer Suite. The original price is $197 bucks but after the coupon code, the price is only $147.75. When you figure that a personal membership to BackupBuddy…
In one of the chapters in the WordPress All In One Desk Reference, Andrea includes a list of recommended plugins for use in a WordPress Network. One of those is no longer available for download. This is a guest post is by Ann Smarty, founder of a community of guest bloggers: My Blog Guest and first contribution as part of a new My Blog Guest – Splashpress Media partnership.
The best (and I’d say the only) way to create a strong community of talented guest authors around your blog is to offer incentives. You want your guest bloggers to be sincere in their desire to provide quality – so you want to be sincere in your desire to pay back.
No, it is not about money. Guest blogging is about benefit exchange: the authors give your blog high-quality content (and thus traffic and leads) and you give your guests exposure.
So do you promote your guest authors enough?
Rewarding with Backlinks
You may not really like that but let’s face it: most (even awesome) guest authors contribute content for links. Being generous in linking is…

Most of the “related posts” plugins out there while they provide some kind of control on how to create related posts, they all rely on an algorithm and the results are automatic. I installed the TweetMeme WordPress plugin the other day, and I’m pleased with the results.
Not only was it really easy to install and configure, but I’ve noticed several people actually using the button to retweet my posts. You can see it in action in the top right corner of this post.
In this WordPress plugin review, I’ll go over installing the TweetMeme plugin and give an overview of the options. And there’s a screencast too! All after the jump.
How to Install TweetMeme for WordPress
You can install TweetMeme for WordPress just like any other plugin. Also since it’s available in the WordPress.org plugin repository, you have the option of installing it automatically via your WordPress admin panel.
After installing and activating, you should see a new “TweetMeme” menu in the sidebar of your WordPress dashboard. The settings page should look something like this.
